Shell money is one of the ancient Chinese coins. Jade shells are a kind of imitation shells. In the Shang and Zhou dynasties, with the development of economic trade, jade shells were imitated to make up for the lack of natural shells in circulation. The exchange value of jade shells was equal to or lower than that of natural shells. The unit of measurement was peng, and one peng was ten shells. The deep grooves and thread marks on the shells were also the signs of measurement. With the development of economic trade, after the Spring and Autumn Period, jade shells gradually lost their circulation function and became general ornaments, used to sew on silk fabrics, and some were also used as burial objects.

This set of jade shells is about 35mm long, 23mm wide, and 5mm thick. They are shaped like natural seashells, with a raised back, a deep grinding groove on the front, and five fine grinding lines on both sides of the groove. There are two holes in the middle of the shells, and the back of the shells is flat. The material is jade. Due to its age, the shells have slightly calcified as a whole, forming a milky white and translucent state.
