Jade Tiger with Upturned Tail and Artful Soak-induced Color
Jade Tiger with Upturned Tail and Artful Soak-induced Color
The jade tiger is a fierce beast that represents military power and is revered by merchants. It can ward off evil spirits.
This jade tiger is made of white jade, which is warm and moist. The tiger's body is covered with dark brown stripes and brown-red cow hair patterns, which are very cleverly applied, just like the color of the tiger's fur.
The tiger is looking straight ahead with its head down, its face flat, its eyes shaped like the Chinese character "臣" (minister) directly connected to its nose, its pointed ears standing upright, its mouth open as if roaring, and its mouth hollowed out to reveal sharp teeth. This jagged, bloody mouth is a representative modeling method for tigers in the Shang Dynasty.
The jade tiger stands with its limbs slightly bent, with full muscles and a strong neck decorated with shield-shaped patterns. It has a round back and arched waist, and is decorated with typical Shang Dynasty double yin squeeze yang curling patterns, cloud and thunder patterns, and herringbone patterns, representing the tiger's fur. A thick tiger tail rises to the back, and the tail is also decorated with double yin line herringbone patterns. The tip of the tail is curled into a round hole, which can be used for hanging.
This jade tiger has well-proportioned limbs, smooth lines, fine carving, meticulous hollowing technology, and perfect polishing. It is definitely made by the top jade craftsmen.
