Round-carved white jade flying bear
Round-carved white jade flying bear
This jade flying bear is made of white Hetian jade, which is warm and mature, with some light brown stains. The surface is covered with patina and has a glassy sheen. The jade bear opens its mouth, revealing its fangs and pointed tongue. Its eyebrows are relaxed, its eyes are bright, its forehead is protruding, its ears are pointed, and there is a horn-like mane behind its head.
The bear is squatting, with a pair of front paws clasped on the sides of its chest. It has two wings on its back, and the wings are finely carved with fish scales and feather patterns. It sits with its chest puffed out, has a big belly, a sturdy body, and full muscles. The joints are embossed with cirrus patterns, and the backs of its limbs are covered with manes. The pointed tail hangs down to support the two feet.
The jade flying bear is very small but rich in details, vivid in image, well-proportioned, full of imagination and spirit. All details of the teeth, beard, hair, wings and nails are shown. All of them reflect the superb jade carving skills of the Han Dynasty. It is definitely a small masterpiece.
